PRESSTMAN, Stephen Wilson: engineer; age 31; enl.  23/5/61, at Alexandria; Capt., Co. I. Wded., badly, 18/7/61, at Blackburn's Ford. Det. in charge of working party on roads, and in locating railroad from Manassas to Centreville, 1861-62. Apptd. Capt. of Engineers, 15/2/62. Ordered in 5/62, to report to Gen. Beauregard at Corinth, Miss., and served thereafter with the Western Army, as Chief Engineer, Army of Tenn., on staffs of Generals Hardee, Bragg, and Johnston. In 1/64, he received a furlough to Va. to recover his health. On 30/1/64, at a stop on the Piedmont Railroad, about 8 miles from Danville, he was killed while attempting to cross the tracks in front of the engine and tender returning from a water tank. Bur. Epis. Cem., Alexandria.

RYAN, John: age 29; enl. 23/5/61, at Alexandria; Pvt., Co. I. Wded. 31/5/62, at Seven Pines. AWOL, "supposed to be dead", 4/63.

RYAN, Timothy: b. Ireland; farmer in Mass.; removed to Madison Co., Va., where he assisted in the construction of a county turnpike; moved to Alexandria; empld. in construction of Orange & Alexandria Railroad; severely injured in a railroad accident. Age 21; enl. 23/5/61, at Alexandria; Pvt., Co. I. Wded. (neck), probably at Seven Pines, admitted to hosp., Charlottesville, 6/6/62; ret. to duty, 29/7/62. On U. S. register, 16/2/65, Bermuda Hundred, as a "deserter from the enemy." Sent to Wash., D. C., where he took the oath. Postwar occ. street delivery freight clerk, Orange & Alexandria Railroad. Acquired a good education, and was "one of the best mathematicians in the city". Died 29/11/93. Bur. St. Mary's Cem., Alexandria.

SHENNESSY, Simon: b. Ireland; age 28; enl. 23/5/61, at Alexandria; Pvt., Co. I. Dischd., 3/11/62. Taken prisoner at Linden Stn., 21/7/63; sent to Point Lookout. Prison Doc. states he would like to see the Union restored. He was discharged, not strong enough for a soldier. He does not want to enter the U. S. service unless there is a great need of men, and in that case he would go. Released 21/1/64, "Simon Shonisee," citizen, on taking the oath.

SIMS, Benjamin Haggason: b. Locust Creek area, Louisa Co., 10/1/43. Enl. 1/10/63, at Richmond; Pvt., Co. I. Sims, with Robert E. Old, (also of Co. I), became separated from the regiment, 2/4/65, and decided "to go home." He was paroled at Ashland, 27/4/65. Died in 1919. Bur. family cemetery on the farm, 4 miles north of Louisa. His diary is in Swank, Confederate Letters and Diaries 1861-1865. (1988)

SLEMBER, Benjamin: b. Saxony, Germany; res. Maryland; railroad hand; age 21; enl. 20/5/61, at Alexandria; Pvt., Co. I. Admitted to Chimborazo Hosp. No. 4, Richmond, 12/12/64, with typhoid fever and bronchitis. Died 2/2/65.

SMITH, R.: Pvt., Co. I. Only record of his service is a voucher for $30 made out 26/9/63, to R. R. Saunders, Co. I, 17th Va., for his arrest of R. Smith, a deserter.

SOUTHERLAND, James: railroad hand; age 25; enl. 23/5/61, at Alexandria; Sgt., Co. I. Deserted 30/5/62. George Wise noted 29/10/61, that Southerland got tight, and was put in the guard house for cursing the colonel.

SULLIVAN, Jeremiah: railroad hand; age 36; enl. 23/5/61, at Alexandria; Cpl., Co. I. Dishon. dischd. 30/11/61. Court-martialed for refusing to go on picket at Fairfax C. H., 1/9/61, and for refusing to do military duty afterwards. Sentenced to be drummed out of camp of the 17th Regt.

Heavy Arty., organized 3?62, from the 131st Regt. (Lynchburg), Va. Militia. Reported to have been a boat captain on the James River earlier in the war.

WHALAN, James: b. Ireland; enl. 23/5/61, at Alexandria; Pvt., Co. I. Captured at Frayser's farm, 30/6/62; sent to Fort Columbus, N. Y. Harbor, and to Fort Warren, Mass. Released for exchange, 31/7/62. Wded. (shoulder and neck), 16/5/64, at Drewry's Bluff. Dischd., 31/8/64, age 49, over age for conscription. In confinement, Wash., D.
