Captured at Sayler's Creek; sent to Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D. C., and then to Johnson's Island. Released 18/6/65, after taking oath; doc. gives Richmond res., tan complexion, dark hair, blue eyes, 5 ft. 10 in. Settled in Washington after the war. Studied medicine and became resident physician, Columbia Hosp., and later assistant surgeon and a director. Prof. Surgery, Georgetown Med. School, and helped establish the Garfield Mem. Hosp. Mbr. BARNES, William A.: 1st Lt., Fairfax Riflemen, 1859; farmer; age 27; enl. 25/4/61, at Fairfax C. H.; 1st Lt., Co. D.  On recruiting service, 1-2/62. Captured at Frayser's Farm, 30/6/62. Sent to Fort Columbus, and to Fort Warren, Mass. Released 31/7/62, to be exchanged. Prom. to Capt., 17/9/62. Present, 10/64. With nine of the 17th Va. he gave himself up to U. S. forces in Fairfax Co., 16/5/65, hoping to meet with terms announced on 14/4/65, that all stragglers of the Army of Northern Virginia, who would give themselves up, would be paroled on the same terms of Gen. Lee's surrender. Barnes and others were confined 19/4/65, in Old Capitol Prison, Washington. On 27/4/65 Barnes was sent under guard to Alexandria, where on 29/5/65, he took the Oath of Amnesty.
